The Thompson High boys and girls track and field teams each finished in the top 8 during the AHSAA Class 7A State Championships at Gulf Shores. The girls finished in fifth place while the boys were 8th place finishers.
Final day highlights included a school record and state championship performance by the girls 4 x 100 relay team. Alandria McCurdy, Zakiria Holifield, Niya Oden and London Wooley finished in a time of 47.47 seconds to outdistance the competition.
Holifield and McCurdy also scored in the 100 meters, finishing fifth and seventh overall. Holifield added a third place finish in the 200 meters, setting a school record at 24.42 seconds, and McCurdy finished eighth in that event.
McKenzie Hogue closed out an outstanding meet and a tremendous year by finishing second at 800 meters. The junior standout finished in a time of 2:14.10, which only trailed the 2:13.38 run by Grace Jensen of McGill-Toolen. Hogue also set a school record.
Zoria Miller had a school record throw of 39 feet, 2 inches in the shot put.
On the boys side, the 4 x 400 relay team was one of four teams which ran faster than the previous state record. The Warriors finished in a time of 3:10.74 and finished in fourth place. The 4 x 100 team also had a great showing, finishing sixth in a time of 42.93.
At 800 meters, Thomas Cousins finished tied for eighth. Timothy Osborne finished eighth in the 300 meter hurdles.
