Thompson High bowling teams perform well on first day of AHSAA championships

The Thompson High boys’ and girls’ bowling teams each had outstanding days in the AHSAA State Bowling Championships on Thursday at Oak Mountain Lanes. The girls team finished first during the seeding round and the boys’ team placed fifth.

Sophomore Gillian Baker not only led the girls’ team to the top spot but she set a record along the way. Baker rolled a AHSAA tournament record 256 in her first game and bested that with a 264 in her second game. She finished with a 186 to lead the way among individuals with a total of 706.

Katie Keener also had a strong day, finishing in third with a total of 576. Keener finished with a 238 in her final round, which was her best score of the day. Jessica Lynn Sherman was the only other Thompson individual to finish in the top 20 on Thursday. She was 13th with a total of 502. Alyssa Keaton was 21st with a total of 479.

Overall, the Thompson girls finished with 2,631 pins. Stanhope Elmore was second at 2,446.

On the boys side, Landon Masters rolled scores of 223, 229 and 200 to finish in 8th place individually with a total of 652. Caleb Farmer was 13th with a high of 232 and a total score of 652.

Overall, the Warriors had a score of 2,882, which was fifth best. Vestavia Hills’ 3,062 was the top score of the day.

Both teams will compete on Friday in a single elimination format to determine the state champion. We will update with both teams opening assignment when the brackets are released.
