Thompson Warriors race to a big lead and cruises to region win over Huffman
The Thompson Warriors took care of business early and cruised to a 41-8 victory over Huffman High in a Class 7A Region 3 football game at Larry Simmons Stadium.
Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter and had two more touchdowns before he sat down for good in the second quarter. Overall, Tagovailoa was 11-of-15 for 169 yards with the five touchdowns and no interceptions. Backup quarterback Sawyer Pate was 2-of-4 for 42 yards.
Mo Edwards had touchdown receptions of 7 and 37 yards, Ahmad Harris-Edwards touchdowns came from 7 and 10 yards and Kyle Smoak had a 21-yard touchdown receptions. The other Thompson touchdown came on a 1-yard run by Pate.
Thompson (8-0 overall, 6-0 Region 3) had a 41-0 lead at halftime before the Warriors took their foot off the pedal. Thompson had 281 yards with just 70 coming on the ground. Leading rushers Shad Byrd and JoJo Ford combined for just three carries.
It was another strong effort for the Thompson defense, which lost the shutout with 8:26 left in the game. The Vikings (3-5, 1-5) managed just 141 yards on 51 plays. Only 35 of Huffman’s yards came through the air and Thompson had two interceptions.
Thompson can now turn its attention to next week’s huge Region 3 showdown with Hoover. The game will be played at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The winner of next Friday’s game will be the Region 3 champion.
