Thompson Warriors answer questions during spring game vs Mcgill-Toolen Yellow Jackets

May 23, 2016

Mobil, AL.-  The Thompson Warrior football team saw Saturday May 21st, as an opportunity to answer many questions. The Warriors will replace multiple starters on both sides of the ball moving into the 2016 football season. Most notably, Thompson will be replacing a staring quarterback, running back, corner back and nose-guard. Thompson used the game as an opportunity to travel and prepare for the season opener against Godby HS in August. The games was billed as a must see by Al.com as Thompson would take on the defending 7A State Champion Mcgillv-Toolen Yellow Jackets.

The game opened as Mcgill received the opening kickoff and the Warrior defense immediately forced a three and out. The Warrior defense managed to snuff out a Mcgill scoring opportunity early in the first quarter when Myles Brown intercepted a Bubba Thompson pass at the 2 yard line.  The Warriors opened up the scoring with a 19 yard pass from Caleb Ragland to Shad Byrd and converted the extra point to make it 7-0 with 8:51 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Mcgill would find it difficult to move the ball the majority of the first half as Thompson defended well allowing only one score, a 28 yard touchdown pass from Bubba Thompson to Jalen Tolbert , with :51 left in the first half.

The second half saw a seesaw of possessions as both defenses managed big stops. Scores seemed difficult to come by until Mcgill managed to knock a 22 yard field goal through the uprights with 5:49 left in the 3rd quarter making it 10-7 Mcgill.  Momentum seemed to shift as Mcgill was able to move the ball and capitalize  on another field goal opportunity, this time a 19 yard attempt pushing the score to 13-7 Mcgill with 8:59 remaining in the 4th quarter.

The Warriors continued to battle only needing a score to tie and an extra point to take the lead. The Thompson defense again stood tall not allowing any other scores and forcing a fumble and subsequent recovery. Thompson and Mcgill traded possessions. Mcgill was forced to punt after a three and out and Thompson was able to take advantage in the kicking game, as Austin Davis scored on a 78 yard punt return for a touchdown. Thompson converted the point after with 3:41 remaining in the game pushing the score to 14-13. Thompson managed to hold Mcgill defensively and managed to gain tough yards in the running game to move the chains and run out the clock. Thompson was able to hold off Mcgill and win 14-13.

The Warriors finished the game out gaining the Yellow Jackets 274-213. Thomspon quarter backs Josh Huner and Caleb Ragland combined to go 13-28 for 177 yards. Shad Byrd led all rushers with 113 yards. Thompson forced 3 turnovers and Nick Mobley led the defense with three tackles and a tackle for loss.
